Isaac Christians is 116 years old, and has the attitudes, morality, and preferences one would expect a 116-year-old man to have (Greta Garbo is his ideal of female beauty). He has seen the entire 20th century come and go, has looked into the face of Hell itself, has died and come back, and nothing really frightens him anymore. He considers the current generation of young people vain, shallow, and frivolous, obsessed as they are with current fads and fashions, but he understands that his generation was no different at their age. He detests popular music, movies, and television, and uses computers only with reluctance and difficulty. He has also seen two women he loved die, and is in no great hurry to become romantically involved again, even if a prospective love interest could get past his monstrous appearance.
Goals: |
To protect mankind from devils, demons, and evil magic. |

Special Abilities
Advantages: |
HARD TO KILL - Simply put, the Gargoyle is incredibly difficult to kill. The curse that binds him to the Gargoyle form will cause his parts to reassemble themselves. Once his pieces are reassembled he will reanimate, and be good as new.
Power(s): |
RESISTANCE - Magic Attacks: Gargoyle has increased resistance to magic based attacks. Gargoyle can ignore attacks weaker than his protective aura. RESISTANCE - Vampirism: Gargoyle has increased resistance to any life draining type attacks. Such attacks include forms of Psi-, Bio-, Energy, Magic, and Power Vampirism. Gargoyle can ignore any vampiric attack whose rank is less than this Power's rank. He can reduce The effectiveness of the vampire's attack by deducting his Power Rank from the vampiric attack's Power rank. Gargoyle can ignore attacks with Intensities less than his Power rank and may reduce higher level attacks by his own Power Rank. DETECTION - Magic: Gargoyle can detect and identify magic and its effects. He can detect both magic in actual use and in potential. As such, this is another way to detect mages, supernatural creatures, other worldly beings such as Gods. He can identify the past use of magic, identify the caster if familiar to them, and in some instances identify the actual spell. TRUE SIGHT - Gargoyle can see the correct image of a target, despite any attempts at concealment or disguise it. This Power can penetrate any means of hiding something's true nature, psionic, illusionary, or power-based. True Sight can penetrate any disguise at or below its rank. Range is limited to normal sight range. FLIGHT - Gargoyle can fly through air and space without an apparent means of propulsion. although, he possesses small wings, they are not the source of his ability to fly. They do steer his flight, and if bound he would be unable to move effectively, causing him to stop in mid-air. The Power rank determines the maximum speed he can attain in a specific condition. Gargoyle can resist atmospheric friction, as his lungs have adapted to breathe high velocity wind. MAGICAL FORTITUDE - The Gargoyle possesses a natural resistace to most sorceries, magics, enchantments and their inherent effects. Regardless of the magical properties of a sword or length of rope or other magical item, he is capable of resisting magical effects of said magic. However he is wholly subject to the physical aspects of such an object though regardless of its magical properties. I.E. a sword is still a sword and can cut him, a rope is still a rope and can bind him, not because of any inherent magical qualities but because it is a property of vessel which contains the magic. Thus most magical effects will not effect him, and the stronger ones will be greatly reduced regarding whatever effects they might have on him. REGENERATION - Should Gargoyle be hurt, his magical physiology can rapidly recover from any wound or injury. Cuts quickly close and disease symptoms disappear. He heals at an accelerated rate equal to the his endurance rank times the normal amount of time which might be normally required to heal. With time, he can regrow large areas of lost tissue, especially severed limbs, even lost limbs or organs It is not known if he can regenerate after death. BIO-MYSTICAL ENERGY MANIPULATION - Gargoyle can siphon off the bio-mystical life force of another being at a distance, causing varying degrees of shock and physical weakness. He does not use this energy himself; he simply lets it dissipate to the surrounding biosphere. He can also project bolts of concussive force from his hands using is own bio-mystical energy, and erect protective barriers around himself and others. This manipulation of bio-mystical energy is accompanied by a "black light" effect (but this is not ultraviolet light). IMMORTAL - Gargoyle's body is immune to disease and further aging.
Skill(s): |
ADMINISTRATION - Gargoyle was mayor of a small town in Virginia for several decades and possesses the administrative skills one would expect a long-standing mayor to have. MILITARY - Gargoyle was a soldier in WWI and has all the skills one would expect a trained soldier to have. OCCULT - Gargoyle knows about magical societies, antiquities, runes, and forgotten lore. This skill is required to create magic items ( +1R to Int) TACTICS - If Gargoyle takes a full exchange to analyze an ongoing or anticipated combat situation and are able to share his/her insights with allies, s/he and all his/her allies gain a +4 to all actions in their first exchange and a +2 to all actions in their second exchange. Not all allies need to attack at the same time to gain this benefit, some may hold themselves in reserve and still receive the bonuses on their first exchange, rather than on the exchange that others first engage in combat. TRIVIA - Gargoyle is an expert on old movies (pre 1950s).
Disadvantages: |
CULTURAL SNOB - Gargoyle despises pop culture, and doesn’t relate well to people that enjoy it. +2 difficulty to socialization rolls when dealing with such people. MORAL CODE - No matter what, Gargoyle will not kill or more importantly, allow someone else to kill or be killed by their actions or lack thereof, regardless of the situation or mitigating circumstances. Likewise, and to a lesser degree, they will not permit others to be harmed and try to minimize property damage where possible. Saving lives takes precedence over all, even over catching the bad guys. Needless to say there are times when this code causes problems. |

History
Isaac Christians was born in Christiansboro, Virginia, a town founded by his ancestors. His life was full of regrets. As a child he accidentally pushed his brother Jeremiah off the roof to his death during a game. Stricken with guilt, Isaac built an emotional shell around himself, gradually emerging years later thanks to his friends, Elaine Willoughby and Buster Henderson; they called themselves the “Three Musketeers”, and while Buster was Isaac’s idol, Elaine was his first crush. When Buster became engaged to Elaine, Isaac was devastated. Soon after America entered the First World War; Buster swiftly signed up. Isaac followed soon after, but panicked when a sniper’s bullet killed a comrade on his first day in the trenches. Fleeing, Isaac ran into Buster, but soon saw him cut down by a hail of German gunfire while Isaac froze in terror.
After the war Isaac abandoned his hometown and its memories. He traveled to Paris, where he became obsessed with Germaine, a prostitute bearing an uncanny resemblance to Elaine. Eventually, when she left him, Isaac resumed his travels, finally reaching Hyderabad, India, where for two years he became a follower of the holy man Vishnu Dass, gradually regaining his faith. His journey ended with a letter informing him his father had died; Isaac returned home to take on his familial responsibilities, spending decades as Christiansboro’s mayor until he retired.
Increasingly upset at Christiansboro’s decline into poverty, Isaac read old books on magic and summoned up Avarrish, one of an alliance of minor demons styling themselves as "The Six-Fingered Hand," who promised to save Christiansboro if Isaac would temporarily serve him. Christians made a pact with the demon Avarrish to inhabit the body of an ancient gargoyle and act as an agent of the Six-Fingered Hand. The demons of the Hand transferred Christians' life force into the Gargoyle body and sent him on a mission to capture and kill a woman, but he rebelled against the Hand.
Christians later returned to Christianboro, and was later released from the Gargoyle body and the original demon spirit re-inhabited it. Christians, to prevent the chaos being wreaked by the gargoyle, re-assumed the body with the help of a young druid who would one day become Dr. Druid and killed his original human body to prevent the demon from returning.
The Gargoyle is the result of the magical transfer of Isaac Christians' spirit into the body of the Gargoyle. Gargoyle possessed superhuman strength and durability in his gargoyle form. His leathery hide offered resistance to various forms of physical attack. He could manipulate "bio-mystical" energy to numerous effects, including concussive blasts and projection of the emotion of fear into others. He could siphon bio-mystical energy from others, causing temporary debilitating weakness. Surrounding himself in a field of bio-mystical energy granted Gargoyle limited immunity to certain types of spells. Gargoyle could fly via mystical levitation; his wings were incapable of producing sufficient lift but could be used for navigation. Gargoyle could regenerate lost or damaged limbs, although they could differ wildly in appearance from the original limb.
Over-expenditure of bio-mystical energy over a short time could weaken or kill the Gargoyle; also, he could be commanded to act against his will by a wizard who spoke a particular obscure spell.
Isaac Christians was a student of the occult with minor mystical ability. Prior to his transformation, Christians had some ability to manipulate mystical forces, including rudimentary spell-casting and summoning demons.
Christians travels the country with his good friend Dr. Druid seeking out supernatural threats and have lead them to New York City to the Avengers who had sent them an invitation to join their organization.
