Special Abilities
Advantages: |
ATTRACTIVE - Valkyrie has a habit of turning heads where ever she goes; she's just damn attractive. The more attractive you are, the more likely you are to be noticed. A good appearance is also more likely to add to one's approachability. COMBAT REFLEXES - Valkyrie can react to threats almost instantly, meaning that she is very difficult to surprise and is extremely effective in close-range hand-to-hand combat. CONFIDENCE - Valkyrie possess an untouchable air of superiority that makes others instinctively realize she's not going to fall apart under pressure. She doesn't come off as cocky, although she can be so at times. HARD TO KILL - Simply put, Valkyrie, like all Asgardians, is incredibly difficult to kill. Even when you blow her to bits, she has an annoying habit of surviving... somehow. TIRELESS - Valkyrie can function better with less sleep then most. While the average person needs a good eight hours a night, Brunnhilde requires fewer hours, or even less than an hour of sleep per night in a lot of cases. However, Brunnhilde still gets tired like a normal people do, but this happens at a much slower pace.
Power(s): |
SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH - Brunnhilde, like all Asgardians, possesses superhuman strength. She is significantly stronger than any other Valkyrie, and most other Asgardian men and women for that matter. She can lift up to 45 tons whereas the average Asgardian can lift around 25-30 tons. SUPERHUMAN SPEED - Brunnhilde can run and move at speeds that are beyond the natural physical limits of the finest human athlete. SUPERHUMAN STAMINA - Brunhilde's advanced musculature produces considerably less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of a human being. At her peak, she can exert herself physically at peak capacity for about 24 hours before the build up of fatigue toxins in her blood begins to impair her. SUPERHUMANLY DENSE TISSUE - Brunhilde's bodily tissue, like that of all Asgardians, possesses about 3 times the density of the bodily tissue of a human. As a result, she is much heavier than she appears and her denser tissue contributes somewhat to her physical strength. SUPERHUMAN DURABILITY - Brunhilde's body is much harder and more resistant to conventional forms of physical injury than the body of a human. She can withstand falls from great heights, exposure to extremes in both temperature and pressure, high caliber bullets, and tremendous impact forces without sustaining injury. SUPERHUMAN AGILITY - Brunhilde's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are all enhanced to levels that are beyond the physical limits of the finest human athlete. SUPERHUMAN REFLEXES - Brunhilde's reflexes are similarly enhanced and are superior to those of the finest human athlete. SUPERHUMAN LONGEVITY - Like all Asgardians, Brunnhilde is extremely long lived and ages at a pace much slower than that of a human being. However, unlike some other god pantheons like the Olympians, Asgardians do continue to age, at a rate of about 1 year every 100 Earth years. REGENERATIVE HEALING FACTOR - Despite her body's great resistance, Brunnhilde can sustain physical injury just like any other Asgardian. If injured, her metabolism enables her to rapidly regenerate damaged bodily tissue faster and more extensive than a human being is capable of. Injuries such as slashes and puncture wounds can heal completely within a matter of hours and broken bones within a matter of days. However, she isn't able to regenerate a severed limb or missing organ. DEATH PERCEPTION - Like all Valkyries, Brunnhilde can perceive and sense the coming of Death. She can see a "deathglow" surrounding a person who is in serious danger of dying, although most Asgardians and human beings cannot see the glow. A person surrounded by the deathglow might still be saved from dying until he or she meets his or her inevitable end at some later time under different circumstances. MYSTICAL TELEPORTATION - Brunnhilde can transport herself and a dying or dead spirit from the Earth's dimension to an other-dimensional realm of the dead, just by willing herself to do so. She can also return through an act of will. Odin granted the Valkyrior the ability to traverse the nine realms unhindered by physical boundaries, that they might ferry the spirits of the noblest warriors into Valhalla. Those rejected by the Valkyries go to Hel, instead.
Skill(s): |
COMBAT MASTERY (armed & unarmed) - Valkyrie has had centuries of experience with several different forms of combat. Her natural fighting ability is among the best of all Asgardian females, matched only by Sif. She is well skilled with all manner of weapons, but she prefers her sword Dragonfang, and her enchanted spear Geirr. LORE (Asgardian) - Valkyrie is well-versed in her people's history. RESIST DOMINATION - Valkyrie's mind is notably harder (but not impossible) for a telepath to break into. Due to her Asgardian heritage, she reduces the difficulty to avoid or resist mental attacks by one level. SINGING - Val would prefer not to admit it, but she is a pretty great singer. Her voice is strong, clear, and it projects well; however, she really only sings in the shower, or while riding Aragorn and soaring across the sky (where no one else should be able to hear her). STEALTH - The art and science of avoiding detection. Valkyrie is aware of her body, of her body's movements, and most importantly of its limits. This understanding allows her to move with the utmost care and silence, and also to freeze stock-still in a concealing shadow when necessary, in an effort to avoid detection. Likewise, she can also prowl about rooftops and the like; high-technology electronic systems and some superpowers and heightened senses, however, will negate this ability.
Disadvantages: |
IGNORANT - Coming to Earth from Asgard, Valkyrie tends to miss common cultural references that people take for granted, and so people may get the impression that she is slow or uneducated. ASGARDIAN CITIZENSHIP - As a demi-goddess and citizen of Asgard, there is virtually nothing on-file with the United States government. She has no drivers license, no social security number, no ID... This can make everyday things quite difficult, if not impossible - unless she can rely on a friend or teammate. MISSING MEMORIES - Should Brunnhilde and/or Thor's memories be restored, they would remember each other from their past mortal lives, before Sigfried was killed and Brunnhilde threw herself on his funeral pyre. This could be a disadvantage, as Odin has purposefully removed these particular memories - for some reason he doesn't want them to remember. |
Equipment
Uniform: |
Brunnhilde wears blue and silver Asgardian armor that is similar to Thor's, although this Valkyrior armor is distinctly more feminine.
Equipment: |
DRAGONFANG - An enchanted sword, said to have been carved from a tooth of an extra-dimensional dragon. The sword is virtually indestructible. It also allows her to change her attire at will, and it remains invisible on her hip while sheathed. Dragonfang can also absorb and redirect electrical and magical blasts or attacks, and it can shatter mystical barriers. Valkyrie usually carries an enchanted long spear, as well, named Geirr. AVENGERS IDENTICARD - State-of-the-art tech at its finest. These credit card-sized gadgets act not only as identification for all Avengers (active and reserve), but also as communicators and tracking devices. Designed and manufactured by Stark Enterprises, the Avengers Identicards have proven to be a valuable resource in the field. Each card has a flat-screen monitor to send and receive audio and video data. The Identicard can beep like a pager, communicate like a videophone, and record like a mini-recorder; it also has a virtually global range with satellite uplink. As a tracking device, it can be used to locate an Avenger via his or her card's unique signal. In addition, it can act as a small computer with a numerical access pad. All by itself, this makes it an overpowered calculator, but with appropriate access codes, it can contact Avengers computers, which can then be operated with voice commands. The Identicard also acts as an ignition key for Avengers vehicles and as a key to Avengers bases. The cards are waterproof and are resistant to pressure.
Resources: |
Brunnhilde has all the resources of Asgard, Valhalla, the Valkyrior and the Avengers at her fingertips, should she need anything.
Transportation: |
ARAGORN - Valkyrie is a skilled equestrian, and she often rides a winged, white, male horse by the name of Aragorn. Aragorn has EX ground and air speed. His other stats are as follows: Fighting: GD Agility: EX Strength: REM Endurance: INC Reason: TY Intuition: GD His wingspan is eighteen and a half feet from wing tip to wig tip. His wings are fully feathered, like a bird's. His bones are hollower than a normal horse's, making him weigh less than a normal horse of his size would. His body is virtually devoid of fat, possessing greater proportionate muscle mass than a normal horse. His eyes are specially adapted to be able to withstand high-speed winds, which would hurt the average equine eye. He possesses special membranes in his respiratory system enabling him to extract oxygen from air at high velocity of at high altitudes. He also has some magical properties. |

History
Odin, the All-Father of Asgard, created nine mighty Valkyries (including Brunnhilde), who were to act as the Valkyrior (the choosers of the slain, warrior-goddesses), sweeping over the battle fields of Earth astride flying horses and gathering the souls of dead and dying heroes, taking them to Valhalla, which is the Asgardian resting place for the worthy dead. Brunnhilde was the eldest of the nine, and was very dear to Odin. Brunnhilde served Asgard capably in this capacity for centuries.
At a young age, Brunnhilde and Sif were two of the few female Asgardians to enter into training in order to become warriors. The two girls started out as rivals due to Sif's jealousy, believing that the blonde Brunnhilde would be more competition for winning the affections of Thor. Even though the two initially got off to a rough start, they eventually became allies when Brunnhilde helped Sif to break an enchantment on Thor which was placed by Amora when she used the Mirror of Mycha. To this day, Sif is perhaps the only female Asgardian who may be equal to Brunnhilde in combat. Once Brunnhilde had grown and completed her training, she was appointed by the All-Father, Odin, to lead the Valkyrior.
After Odin appointed Brunnhilde as the Leader of the Valkyrior, Valkyrie led the Valkyrior to gather the slain souls from Viking battles and to lead them to Valhalla or Hel, as appropriate. Brunnhilde was called by Odin and asked to slay the Viking Hunding, who had come at odds with Odin's son Siegmund (Thor's mortal identity at the time) for betrayal with Hunding's wife, Sieglinda. However, Frigga, Odin's wife, implored Odin to slay Siegmund instead, since he had betrayed a marriage vow. Odin ordered Brunnhilde to slay Siegmund, but made plans of his own at the same time. Brunnhilde appeared before Siegmund on Earth and told him of his pending demise, but she chose to disobey Odin's orders when she realized how deep Siegmund's love for Sieglinda was. When Hunding attacked, Brunnhilde stood back, earning Odin's wrath, as Odin saw Hunding slay Siegmund. Valkyrie took Sieglinda upon her winged horse, hoping to protect her, and fled. Brunnhilde brought Sieglinda back to the Valkyrior, and her sisters took Sieglinda to a place where she could raise her unborn child in safety, hidden from Odin. Brunnhilde gave Sieglinda the shattered pieces of Siegmund's sword, which was called "Needful".
When Odin approached, he cast the Valkyrior aside and vowed to strip Brunnhilde of her godhood and banish her. He took her to the outskirts of Asgard and told her she would be destined to marry the first man she saw and take care of him, as a mortal, as her hair grew gray. In tears, Brunnhilde begged that only a worthy man be given this power over her, and Odin agreed. He took away her godhood and placed her on a rocky crag, surrounded by fire created by Loki at Odin's command, to remain until a brave man found her.
Sieglinda's son, Siegfried (who was a mortal version of Thor), grew to manhood and reforged his father's sword, then went on a quest to find Brunnhilde. He braved many dangers, including the fire, then awoke Brunnhilde with a kiss, and she retained full memories of her past life and Odin's punishment. She initially rejected Siegfried until she realized that their love was true.
Brunnhilde asked Siegfried to leave her behind while he fulfilled his destiny. She cast on him her spell of invulnerability (which would protect Siegfried unless he turned his back on a foe), and he awarded her with a ring he'd won from a dragon.
Siegfried was tricked by three of the Viking Gibichungs, Gunther, Gutruna, and Hagen, into drinking a potion that made him fall in love with Gutruna and forget his vows to Brunnhilde. He agreed to retrieve the ring and Brunnhilde for Gunther so that Gunther could marry Brunnhilde.
Meanwhile, Brunnhilde received a visit from Valtrauta of the Valkyrior, who warned Brunnhilde to cast aside the ring Siegfried had given her, but Brunnhilde refused to do so.
Soon Siegfried returned, but in the visage of Gunther, and he did not remember who Brunnhilde was. He demanded the ring from her finger, and she fainted rather than give it to him. Siegfried took the ring and brought Brunnhilde back to Gunther, where they commenced with a double-wedding: Siegfried to Gutruna, and Gunther to Brunnhilde.
Brunnhilde finally came to her senses again and stated that Siegfried was her love, causing an argument among the Vikings, but Siegfried was protected in the following fight by the spell of invincibility. Siegfried departed with Gutruna, leaving Brunnhilde despairing, and Hagen planning on slipping Brunnhilde a love potion. Feeling betrayed by her true love, Brunnhilde acted out of anger and revealed Siegfried's only weakness: that if he turned his back, he could be slain.
Hagen slew Siegfried and Gunther before being taken away. Brunnhilde, in grief, commanded a funeral pyre be built for Siegfried and set up on the river. In despair, she threw herself onto it, killing herself. Odin had the Valkyrior bring both Thor and Brunnhilde back to Asgard, and he restored them to life. Odin also wiped their memories of their mortal experiences, not wanting to encourage their intimate relationship.
Back home again in Asgard, Brunnhilde and her fellow Valkyries continued to gather heroic mortal warriors for Valhalla for roughly a millennium, up until Thor reached out to Brunnhilde from Midgard (Earth) and across the Rainbow Bridge and pleaded with her to return to Midgard with him to serve with the Avengers. With Odin's blessing, Brunnhilde temporarily handed over command of the Valkyrior to her friend Sif and unknowingly followed after her forgotten beloved, "Sigfried".
And while she is now an Avenger, Valkyrie does still have her sacred Valkyrior duties to carry out: ushering deserving souls to the afterlife.
